Utagawa Kuniyoshi 19th-Century Woodblock "Hare"
Item Details
A 19th-century Japanese woodblock print by Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川 国芳, 1797-1861). Titled Hare (卯 U), the print is from the series Selections for the Twelve Zodiac Signs (見立十二支之内 Mitate jūnishi no uchi) and depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII (市川団十郎) as Kingorō (金五郎) and the actor Bandō Shūka I (坂東しうか) as Kosan (小さん). Printed in 1852, the print has a blockcutter’s mark for Hori Mino (彫巳の) printed in a yellow cartouche on the right edge and a publisher’s seal for Kakumotoya Kinjirō printed on the left edge within a rectangle. The artist’s ‘Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshi ga’ (一勇斎国芳画) signature is printed within a double-gourd shaped cartouche in the lower right corner above a Yoshi kiri seal with the zodiacal date seal is printed alongside. The censor seals of Mera Ta-ichiro and Watanabe Shoemon are printed above the actor’s shoulder. The print and series titles are printed within a cartouche in the upper right corner surrounded by rabbits. The print is displayed behind glass in a wooden frame with beige mat. Hanging hardware is present to the verso.
