C. H. Shearer Signed 19th-Century Etching

Item Details

A late 19th-century etching on paper by well-listed American painter and print-maker Christopher High Shearer (Pennsylvania, 1846 – 1926). The image depicts a bustling Old World inner city scene with unsettlingly tall buildings and dwellings rising toward the sky from below near the canals, creating the city walls. In the canal, people wash clothes and leave their empty rowboats, while nearby farmers work in their small yards. Above them, a bridge stretches across the water, where crowds of people go about their daily business, weaving their way around the unlucky individual being publicly crucified. Artist signature is signed in plate to the lower left. The print is mounted behind mat, under glass in a narrow wood frame with a distressed gilt finish.

Condition

. – to fair. Mat has major foxing on surface; needs replacing. Print itself has light foxing throughout, mostly near bottom edge, with discoloration across.
