Antique Underwood & Underwood Stereoscope with Picture Cards

Item Details

An antique stereoscope with eighty-six stereoscopic picture cards, most of them hand colored. Consumer stereoscopes, like the one offered here, were invented in the mid 1800s and were popular into the first few decades of the twentieth century, especially among the middle and working class. Underwood & Underwood was one of three major companies to produce stereoscopes and the picture cards that went along with them. The stereoscope has a handle that folds down, two slots that hold the picture in place, and two lenses to view the picture through. The cards deal with a wide range of subject matter including nature, domestic partners, courtship scenes, personal family photographs, architectural monuments, children, and more. Marked with patent date and company trademark to the underside.
