An 1892 hardcover edition of Sir Edwin Arnold’s The Light of Asia, subtitled The Great Renunciation. The work describes the life and teachings of the Buddha in narrative verse through a fictional Buddhist disciple narrator, and was a popular work in Victorian Britain, which controlled India and other Asian territories at the time. This is ‘A New Edition’; the first was published 1879. It has patterned cloth boards with gilt accents, gilded page edges, and engraved illustrations, including a portrait of the author protected by a tissue paper leaf facing the title page.
