An original signed 19th century seascape oil painting on canvas by listed artist Robert Hopkin (Scotland, United States, 1832-1907). The work, titled Sailing Vessel, depicts a sailing schooner on turbulent seas, with a cloudy sky populated with gulls, and to the right, an orange-red buoy with flag. The painting, in off white, blue and indigo, is worked in an energetic brush, with thickly applied paint adding to the movement and spirit of the piece. The painting is displayed in a vintage gilded gesso on wood frame with ornate border, and includes a picture light. The piece is signed by the artist to the lower right corner. Robert Hopkin was born in Scotland and moved to Detroit, Michigan as a youth. Marine paintings were his speciality, but he was also accomplished in decorative painting and other styles of landscape painting.Some of his decorative works were the Detroit Opera House and the Cotton Exchange Building in New Orleans. Hopkin was well known for his artist accomplishments in Detroit and was known to have painted over 399 works.
