Inscribed WWI Shell Casings

Item Details

A pair of WWI trench art pieces. This pairing consists of two carved WWI era military shells made into trench art. The large artillery shell features a hand-carved design of the Statue of Liberty, with bottom and top borders and the letters ‘AEF’; most likely standing for the American Expeditionary Forces, led by General John J. Pershing in 1917. The smaller, 75 mm shell has been delicately cut in half to create a small storage jar; decorated with a top bullet handle and emblazoned on the outside with a ‘GIR’ symbol standing for ‘Glider Infantry Regiment’.
