19th Century Japanese Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print by Utagawa Kunisada
Item Details
A mid-19th-century Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by well-listed Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada (歌川 国貞, 1786–1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代歌川豊国). This print depicts the kabuki actor Kataoka Ichizō I (片岡市蔵, 1792-1862) wearing a blue kimono, stepping through a threshold. The actor’s name is printed vertically near his figure on the right side. The artist’s ‘Gototei Kunisada ga’ (五渡亭国貞画) signature is printed below alongside a kiwame censor seal and a Kawaguchi-ya Uhei publisher’s seal. The item is presented in a blue and cream double mat, under acrylic glass, and in a black frame with rounded corners; hanging wire to the verso. Coordinates with item 16NYC998-019.

- ready to hang with metal wire hardware to verso; ripped paper backing; scuffing to frame; small holes in paper along edge of mat window in upper left and lower left corners.
