Signed Hichōzan Shinpo Porcelain Decorative Plaque
Item Details
A mid-Meiji period (1868-1912) Japanese hand-painted porcelain plaque. This piece features three finely dressed people approaching a peafowl couple meandering among blooming peonies. The verso is marked ‘Made in Japan, Made by Hichōzan Shinpo’ (大日本肥蝶山信甫造, Dai Nippon Hichōzan Shinpo tsukuru). Hichōzan is a name applied to a group of export porcelain wares produced by Artia and Satsuma kilns and dates from approximately 1860-1890. ‘Shinpo’ was added by the merchant Tashiro Monzaemon as a trademark for these wares that he exported from Nagasaki.
