An 1854 U.S. Congressional Medal for Commander Duncan Ingraham. The round, bronze medal is marked ‘Presented by the President of the United States to Commander Duncan N. Ingraham as a testimonial of the high sense entertained by Congress of his gallant and judicious conduct on the 2d of July 1853 – Joint Resolution of Congress August 4th 1854’. Commander Ingraham was commended for his actions at Smyrna, where he was instrumental in rescuing from captivity a Hungarian who wished to become an American citizen. The medal was designed by S. Eastman; obverse was sculpted by Peter Cross; reverse sculpted by James Longacre.
