Collection of Three Japanese Woodblock Portraits
Item Details
A selection of three Japanese woodblock prints from the series Rekishika kyōju-yō sankō kakezu-zu published by the Imperial University of Tokyo (東京帝國大學 Tokyo Teikoku Daigaku). The series was issued between 1907 (Meiji 40) and 1920 (Taisho 9). Each print is a portrait of important figures from Japanese history. The first depicts the Buddhist priest Genkū (源空, 1133-1212), an important figure in the history of Jōdo Buddhism. He is shown wearing traditional black robes of a religious figure and holding a strand of Buddhist prayer beads. The second features the Buddhist monk Musō Kokushi (夢窓國師, 1275-1351), also known as Musō Soseki, an influential teacher of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. The last portrait is of the well-known Kanō Tanyū (狩野探幽, 1602-1674), one of the most important painters of the Kanō school. Each print has the title printed in-block in the lower margin. Each is unframed awaiting your choice of presentation.
