Elaborate Handwoven Persian Area Rug

An elaborate handwoven Persian area rug. The rug is attributed to Qashqai weavers, with a Gabbeh figural influence. The rug features a pattern of highly stylized renderings of Persian fallow deer having tack on their backs, and predatory animals. The predators include a popular and iconic Iranian symbol, the Lion and Sun motif, of a lion holding a sabre in one paw, and an unknown stylized animal. Hyacinth floral designs separate the center of the field, in ivory, madder red, indigo and a deeper red on a rich, glossy, sapphire blue field. The central field is framed by a saffron zig-zag border, and has a primary border in salmon, cream, blue and orange. The primary border has an hourglass design framed by symmetric floral guard borders, and the rug has a natural wool warp fringe to either end. Unmarked.
