Boris Solotareff Mixed Media on Paper "The Card Game"
Item Details
A watercolor and graphite on paper work titled The Card Game by listed artist Boris Solotareff (1889-1966), circa 1940. On blue paper, the work depicts a man playing cards at a table rendered in watercolor with a man rendered in graphite. The work bears an estate stamp to the verso. Under a single layer of blue mat, the work is presented under acrylic glass in a simple silver tone frame. Hanging wire and two gallery decals are present to the verso.
Born in Romania, Solotareff received his formal art training at the Munich Academy of the Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. While in Munich, Solotareff was exposed to the Munich Secession, a group of visual artists who sought to defend and promote their art against increasingly conservative views in Germany. His Munich period would impart his continual use of a sense of comfort called gemütlichkeit in his works. Solotareff would later move to the United States, where he remained longer than any other country. He was exhibited widely and often during his lifetime. Today, his works can be found in many private collections.
