Born in Romania, Solotareff received his formal art training at the Munich Academy of the Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. While in Munich, Solotareff was exposed to the Munich Secession, a group of visual artists who sought to defend and promote their art against increasingly conservative views in Germany. His Munich period would impart his continual use of a sense of comfort called gemütlichkeit in his works. Solotareff would later move to the United States, where he remained longer than any other country. He was exhibited widely and often during his lifetime.
