Boris Solotareff Graphite and Watercolor Painting on Paper "Couple Reclining"

Item Details

A graphite and watercolor painting on paper titled Couple Reclining by listed artist Boris Solotareff (1889-1966), circa 1930-1935. The study depicts a reclined couple featuring a man with crossed legs holding a woman with a headpiece. The work is constructed with a subtle scale of purple hues. A stamp reading ‘Estate of Boris Solotareff’ is located to the lower right corner of the composition. A pair of informational labels from ‘Borghi Fine Art Gallery’ are adhered to the verso. Presented behind glass, under a single layer of white matting, housed in a wood woven frame with a gilt and black finish.

Born in Romania, Solotareff received his formal artistic training at the Munich Academy of the Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. While in Munich, Solotareff was exposed to the Munich Secession, a group of visual artists who sought to defend and promote their art against increasingly conservative views in Germany. His Munich period would impart his continual use of a sense of comfort called gemütlichkeit in his works. Solotareff would later move to the United States, where he remained longer than any other country. He was exhibited widely and often during his lifetime. Today, his works can be found in many private collections.
