An original oil painting on board titled The Brown Net, Concarneau by well-listed Cincinnati artist John Ellsworth Weis (1892-1962). The painting depicts boats docked in the small French town. There are figures scattered throughout the painting. It is signed to the lower right. There are gallery labels affixed to the verso. Presented in a gilt frame with a wire to the verso. Weis was born in Indiana and moved to Norwood, Ohio when he was a child. Due to family struggles, he found it necessary to work several day jobs in order to attend classes at the Cincinnati Art Academy in the evenings. Faculty members at the Academy were so impressed with both John’s talent and his work ethic, that at the age of 22 he was offered a full-time position working there. He taught there for the next 38 years, mentoring many up-and-coming young artists in Cincinnati.
