Joseph Hughes Clayton Original Watercolor
Item Details
An original watercolor painting on paper by well-listed Welsh watercolor artist Joseph Hughes Clayton (1870 – 1930). This painting is a brilliant representation of Clayton’s body of work, which mainly consisted of romanticized depictions of the small Welsh fishing village at Cemaes Bay, where Clayton had a cottage. The serene painting depicts a figure walking down a dirt path towards a pair of picturesque stone cottages overgrown with wildflowers. The painting is thoughtfully colored with neutrals accented with pops of bright green and pink, creating an idyllic vision of 19th century Welsh life. The painting is signed to the lower left. It is matted in white and presented behind glass in a wooden frame with off-white finish and a hanging wire.
Condition
- very light discoloration to both painting and matting, consistent with age. Light scratching across frame.
