Indonesian Barong Mask

An Indonesian painted barong mask. This hand painted wood mask is hand made from wood and is stuffed with paper. The mask depicts a wide-eyed face with exaggerated teeth and ears. The figure has a facial piercing and artificial hair with a checkered ribbon attached. The barong is a lion-like beast and leader of good spirits and is a figure important to the mythology of Bali. It features prominently in topeng masked theater and traditional dance.

Condition

- some pieces broken off mask; slight paint fading; staining to checkered fabric; crack along forehead(visible from back).
