Carl Boeckman Original 19th Century Portrait "Sitting Bull"
Item Details
An original oil and graphite painting on board by American portrait artist Carl L. Boeckman (American, Late 19th/Early 20th Century), titled Sitting Bull. The portrait of this important American Indian chief depicts him seated against a white background wearing an ornate headdress and holding a long pipe. A name or alternate title seems to be written to the lower right corner of the piece; the first word reads ‘Big,’ and the second word is illegible. The piece is titled to the verso, and a tag states that the piece was exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. It is presented in a beveled wooden frame with red trim and a hanging wire. A tag from Skinner Auctioneers and Appraisers hangs from the verso. See related item 16CIN340-254.
