Two Ukiyo-e Prints from Hiroshige's Series "Eight Views of Ōmi"
Item Details
A pair of vintage Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints from the series Eight Views of Ōmi (近江八景 Ōmi hakkei). The first print is titled Evening Snow at Hira ( 比良暮雪 Hira Bosetsu) and features a solitary figure walking between among snow-covered mountains towards Lake Biwa. The series and print titles are printed in the upper right corner alongside a poem within the clouds along the top border. The artist’s ‘Hiroshige ga’ signature is printed in-block within a red cartouche in the lower right corner. The second print, from the same series, is titled Autumn Moon at Ishiyama (石山秋月 Ishiyama shūgetsu). It depicts the cliffside Buddhist temple at Ishiyama overlooking Lake Biwa with several boats and a bridge. The series and print titles are printed in the upper right corner along with a poem within the clouds. The artist’s ‘Hiroshige ga’ signature is printed in-block within a red cartouche in the lower right corner. The original series was first published in 1857, but was released in multiple editions. Since the series title cartouche is printed exclusively in red, these are both likely later editions. Both prints are displayed under glass in black lacquered frames.
Condition
- Evening Snow at Hira is significantly faded and has a water stain in the lower portion.
