Exquisite Pair of Vintage Ichimatsu Dolls, Girl and Boy in Traditional Kiimono

Item Details

A pair of 20th century Japanese Ichimatsu dolls, a boy and a girl, each in traditional kimonos with accessories. Each doll has a hand painted face in gofun finish (oyster powder) with inset glass eyes. Their traditional kimonos are embellished in metallic embroidery and they each wear white silk slippers. The girl has a straight hairstyle made popular during the Taisho period and the boys hair is delicately hand painted. Both dolls have a quiet, serene expression. The dolls have their appropriate accessories tucked into their obi sashes to include a fan indicating their aristocratic status. Both dolls are posed on round stands.
These dolls were initially made in the 1930’s to exchange with children in the US in an effort to improve cultural relations after the 1920’s.
