A Japanese Meiji period Bizen ware (circa 1880) depicting ‘Hotei’, one of the seven lucky deities representing popularity and good fortune. The jovial figure is always sculpted with his big belly exposed. The deep red pottery is from one of Japan’s six ancient kilns, the pottery is fired at a low temperature for several days and due to the elaborate process, firings take place only once or twice a year making the pottery highly desirable.
