A large needlepoint Savonnerie-style area rug. This woven piece can function as either a tapestry or rug and features a beautifully elaborate classical French style, with a large crest to the center featuring a large spray of peonies and roses in reds, pinks, ivory, white and shades og foliage green. The pattern is repeated in four crests to each side, on a vibrant cherry red field of tawny gold scrolled foliage. The wide, bright white principal border repeats the pattern again in a smaller scale, connected by tawny gold acanthus leaves. The inner border is a thick band of layered ombre green laurel leaves, intertwined with a variegated pink ribbon. The outermost border resembles an egg and dart style of design, in pale mauve and white. Large floral sprays of roses and peonies in the red and pink palette adorn the corners. A lovely piece of handmade needlepoint.
