A framed lithographic poster advertising the opera H.M.S. Pinafore (or The Lass that Loved a Sailor),by very well-known Victorian opera composing duo Gilbert & Sullivan, made up of W. S. Gilbert (1836 – 1911) and Arthur Sullivan (1842 – 1900). This comedic opera tells a classic tale of two people from different worlds, falling in love against their families’ wishes. Its debut in 1878 marked the beginning of a 571 show run, making it the second-longest running opera of its time, and endearing it to the hearts of the British people. This lithographic poster features an elegantly dressed woman, being gawked at by two high-ranking naval officers. The title of the work is printed to the lower portion of the poster, and the publisher, Stafford & Co. Ltd., is printed to lower margin, as well as ‘No. 1479’. Presented behind glass in a glossy navy blue frame with hanging wire present to verso. This item is part of our WVXU Cincinnati Public Radio Fundraiser.
