Fremont Ellis Portrait "Bambi in Pink Brocade"
Item Details
An original oil painting by listed artist Fremont Ellis (American, 1897-1985) depicting a portrait of the artist’s daughter titled Bambi in Pink Brocade. Writing on the stretcher indicates that the portrait is painted in acrylic polymer (Aquatex) over another oil painting. The painting has a provenance by direct descent through the artist’s family.
Fremont Ellis was born in Virginia City, Montana, and was the son of a traveling dentist. After a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a few months of instruction at the Art Students League, Ellis settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was a member of Los Cinco Pintores society of modern artists in the 1920s, which established the art colony in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His plein aire landscapes are defined by a richly colored impressionist style and quietly sublime vistas of the natural beauty of the American Southwest. Ellis was awarded a gold medal in 1975 from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, and his work is found in private and public collections.
