Chinese Style Step Tansu Chest

A Chinese step tansu chest. The step tansu is a type of Japanese storage cabinet. This example is decorated in a Chinese style, painted black with a large dragon medallion alongside several characters with auspicious meaning. The front is marked ‘good fortune’ (福 fu), ‘longevity’ (壽 shou), and ‘double happiness’ (囍 shuangxi). The tops of the steps are marked with the characters for each of the four seasons (春夏秋冬). The cabinet includes three drawers and two cabinets, creating a four-tier build. All compartments are accessible from either side. It is marked ‘Made in China’ with a small gold foil sticker on the bottom.

Condition

- missing two drawer pulls and Chinese character knobs need repair; some wear on bottom and corners.
