Richard Earlom Mezzotint After Claude Lorrain
Item Details
A mezzotint etching by listed artist Richard Earlom (1743-1822) after a pastoral landscape by Claude Lorrain. Earlom was commissioned by publisher John Boydell to make prints of all 200 drawings by Claude Lorrain included in his book Liber Veritatis. Lorrain’s book was made by the artist to record his completed paintings as drawings. Earlom’s prints were compiled in a book and published by Boydell. This print recalls Lorrain’s renowned romantic landscapes in sepia tones, with classical Roman-inspired architecture on the left and the sun dramatically illuminating the entire scene. This print depicts a pastorial scene with tholos building on a hill. A group of woman appear to be seated along path leading to a small pond with swans. The piece is presented in a wood frame with fabric interior edge. On the verso there are labels for Art Lore starting the original engraving information and the re-order for the engraving. Hanging hardware is attached to the top of the print.
