Japanese "Fukai" Wood Noh Mask in Frame

Item Details

A Japanese Fukai wood Noh mask in a frame. Noh is a form of musical theater where the performers wear elaborate costumes and carefully crafted masks. Noh masks are constructed out of wood and painted in such a way that different emotions can be expressed with one mask depending on the way an actor tilts the mask towards the light source. The example here is a Fukai mask, worn by an actor to portray a middle-aged woman. It is carved with wise eyes, soft features, and delicately rendered laugh lines around the mouth. It is painted white with precise details including high, traditional eyebrows and strands hair. The mask is presented mounted on a red and black shadowbox frame. The maker’s pamphlet, indicating that it was constructed in October of 2001, is included.
