"Camellia of Takano" Ukiyo-e Print by Utagawa Kunisada I

Item Details

An original ukiyo-e woodblock print titled Camellia of Takano (鷹野の山茶花, Takano no sazanka) from the series Popular Matches for Thirty-six Selected Flowers (当盛見立三十六花撰, Tōsei mitate sanjūroku kasen) by the master artist Utagawa Kunisada (歌川 国貞, 1786–1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代歌川豊国). This print depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Kumesaburō III (三代目岩井粂三郎) as the Nun Shōgetsu. The series and print titles are printed in a rectangular cartouche surrounded by camellias in the upper left corner. Along the right edge the print features the artist’s printed ‘Toyokuni ga’ (喜翁豊国画) signature within a red toshidama cartouche, the blockcutter Osendo Horitake’s printed signature (横川堂彫竹) in a yellow rectangular cartouche, and further down the publisher Yorozu-cho Hiranoya (萬町, 平のや) printed seal in a black rectangular seal. A ‘Dog 2, aratame’ combination zodiacal date and censor seal is printed above the artist’s printed signature, dating this print to 1862. The artist’s signature, life dates, and the print’s date are inscribed in pencil on the mat. The print is presented in a black and gold-tone frame.
