Late 19th-Century American Empire Chest
Item Details
A late 19th-century American Empire style chest. The buffet, or chest, is likely made of walnut and/or butternut. It features a scrolled backboard and sides, supporting a set of four rectangular drawers which rest on the top of the chest. Below is a set of three drawers, with hand-cut dovetail joints, and three cabinet doors with raised panels and fluted frames. Turned, half-round columns decorate the sides. The cabinet rests on a simple, square base. The original hardware has been removed from the drawers, and replaced with round brass knobs. The cabinet doors appear to retain their original metal pulls. The cabinet to the left is narrow; the cabinet to the right has two doors that open to a pair of deep shelves. The cabinet frame is stained a medium color, with the drawer fronts, cabinet panels and turned half-round columns stained a darker cherry color. No maker’s marks noted. Please note, this heavy item is located on an upper floor, and buyer will need to carry this item down a flight of stairs.
