Paul Chidlaw Original Charcoal Portrait
Item Details
An original vine charcoal on paper portrait drawing by well-listed American artist Paul Chidlaw (Cincinnati, Ohio, 1900 – 1989). The simple, minimalist drawing depicts a Cubist-style portrait of a smiling woman with long hair and what seems to be a hat, drawn in a few expressive, free-form thick black lines. The drawing is signed to the lower right by the artist. It is matted in white and presented behind glass in a wooden frame with hammered gold tone finish and a hanging wire. Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed in the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
