Pair of Kitagawa Utamaro Reproduction Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints

Item Details

A pair of 1950s reproduction ukiyo-e woodblock prints on paper originally designed by well-regarded genre artist Kitagawa Utamaro (喜多川 歌麿, Japanese, 1753–1806). Each of these prints is an example of Bijin-ga (美人画, literally ‘beautiful picture person’), portraits of beautiful women, a genre that Utamaro specialized in. The first print is titled Hitomoto of the Monji-rō (文字摟 一と本), though the title that was printed in the upper left was not included in this reproduction. The print depicts the geisha Hitomoto wearing an elaborate headdress and holding a stack of papers. The artist’s signature ‘Utamaro hitsu’ (哥麿筆) and seal are printed along the left edge. The second print is titled Misayama of the Chōji-ya (丁子屋貝佐山), featuring the geisha Misayama looking over her left shoulder. The print’s title is printed in the upper right corner, and the artist’s signature ‘Utamaro hitsu’ and seal are printed along the left edge. Both of these 1950s reprints are reproductions after the original Edo period prints. The prints are housed behind glass with a single matting and frames painted to appear like bamboo.
