Pair of Offset Lithograph Reproductions of Japanese Woodblocks
Item Details
A pair of offset lithograph reproductions of antique Japanese woodblock prints. The first print is from a book, and is a reproduction of an original 1852 print by very well-listed Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada I (歌川 国貞, 1786–1864), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代歌川豊国). The print is titled Oiso: (Actor Iwai Hanshirō VII) Tora (大磯のとら) and is from the series Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō (東海道五十三次, Tōkaidō Gojūsan-tsugi). A handwritten note the base of the image misattributes it to Toyokuni Utagawa I. The print is double-matted in beige and brown and is presented in a wooden frame with antiqued silver finish and a sawtooth hanger. The second print was released by ‘Orient Expressions,’ and is a reproduction of an image by well-listed Japanese printmaker Hasegawa Sadanobu III (長谷川貞信, 1881–1963) titled Maiko in Autumn. The print is double-matted in black and mint green and is presented in a wooden frame cut to look like bamboo with gold tone finish and a broken hanging wire.
Condition
- both prints are very faded. Extensive wear and missing glass to both frames.
