Utagawa Kunisada Original 1861 Japanese Woodblock Print
Item Details
An original 1861 woodblock print by extremely prolific 19th-century Japanese printmaker Utagawa Kunisada (歌川 国貞, 1786–1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代歌川豊国). The print is titled Nagoya-ga Enjirō (名古屋下猿次郎), which is possibly the title of a Kabuki play. The print depicts a single figure walking with a lamp and sword through a dark forested scene. The artist’s ‘Toyokuni ga’ signature is printed in a red and yellow toshidama cartouche to the lower right. An Ito-ya Shōbei publisher’s mark is printed to the lower right, along with a Horichō carver’s mark and a combined aratame and zodiacal calendar date seal. The print’s title is printed to the upper left. The print is matted in white and presented behind glass in a thin wooden frame with a hanging wire.
