Japanese Carved Wood and Bone Scroll Cylinder

Item Details

A Japanese carved boxwood and bone scroll cylinder. The scroll cylinder is comprised of bone engraved with monkeys playing beneath fronds of bamboo. The top of the cylinder is fitted with a carved boxwood mother and baby monkey, with black glass eyes and an inlaid circle with the character 大 (large) on the adult monkey’s back. The base of the bone case features the signature ‘古山’ (Koyama) on the base.

Condition

- missing one eye. Cylinder has been glued shut.
