Spanish Revival Vargueño-Like Cabinet from Berkey & Gay

A Spanish revival cabinet by maker Berkey & Gay Furniture Co., constructed circa 1929-48. This elaborate cabinet, related to the vargueño desk, has a studded border to the cabinet doors with intricate diamond-shaped strap hinges. Border of cabinet doors are ornamented with floral stencil designs; doors also feature intricate stenciled design to the sunken rust colored panels. Centered on face of the cabinet is a scrolling diamond-shaped plaque with lock. Beneath the cabinet is a sophisticated gallery with three arches, turned spindles, and elaborately carved bottom edge. Cabinet rests on six legs; four feature vase and ring turning; two are fluted are columnar. Each rests on stretcher with sloping foot. Marked ‘Berky & Gay’ to brass tag to open interior.
