An original oil on canvas painting by listed Ohio painter Wilbur G. Adam (Ohio, 1898 – 1973). A superbly rendered alla prima painting, the image depicts a belly dancer in full costume standing before a yellow and blue curtain with a red sash, pausing for a moment in repose as she gazes pensively at something beyond the pictorial space. This painting is unsigned, but comes from the family of the artist. It is unframed.
Adam was born in Cincinnati and studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy, later joining the Cincinnati Art Club in 1919. He studied under several highly sought-after Cincinnati and Ohian artists, including Frank Duveneck, Lewis Henry Meakin, Herman Wessel, James Hopkins, and Caroline Lord. He spent a portion of his career in Chicago, starting in 1925, where he created a studio from which he was commissioned for many portraits. Upon returning to Cincinnati Adam continued to receive commissions for his portraiture, painting many institutional and business leaders. He is most know for the illustrative quality of his portraits using vibrant colors in a realistic manner.
Condition
- canvas has been remounted to newer stretcher bars, but left and right edges are not secured. Abrasions throughout surface. Edges of canvas are worn.
