John E. Weis Original Oil on Canvas "Floral Still Life"

Item Details

A vintage original oil painting on canvas by well-listed American artist John Weis (Cincinnati, Ohio, 1892 – 1962), titled Floral Still Life, dated 1937. The painting depicts a bright bouquet of the red, orange, and yellow blossoms in a tin vase atop a handled barrel, with a neutral ambiguous backdrop, brilliantly contrasting against the bright blooms. Artist signature is signed and dated to the lower right. The painting is mounted in a beveled wood frame with opulent cast appliqué and a gilt finish with a hanging wire to the verso. Two Cincinnati Art Galleries labels are attached to the verso with artist, title, media and asking price. Weis was born in Indiana and moved to Norwood, Ohio when he was a child. Due to family struggles, he found it necessary to work several day jobs in order to attend classes at the Cincinnati Art Academy in the evenings. Faculty members at the Academy, which included Frank Duveneck, were so impressed with both John’s talent and his work ethic, that at the age of 22 he was offered a full-time position working there. He taught there for the next 38 years, mentoring many up-and-coming young artists in Cincinnati.
