Original Chinese Gouache Painting of Guan Yu

An original Chinese gouache on paper painting depicting the historical Chinese general Guan Yu, standing formidably wearing a long dark cloak with a sword strapped to his back. A red seal and calligraphed inscription with initials D.W. occupy the bottom right corner. The painting is mounted behind white and muted green mat, under glass in a wood frame with beaded border and a silver tone finish with a hanging wire to the verso. Guan Yu was a general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He played a significant role in the civil war that led to the collapse of the dynasty and the establishment of the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. He is respected as an epitome of loyalty and righteousness. He was deified during the Sui dynasty and is still worshipped by many Chinese today.
