Serpentine Scholar's Stone

Item Details

A serpentine scholar’s stone, with a wooden stand. Scholar stones, or scholar rocks, are irregular rocks, often large and heavily eroded, historically prized by Chinese poets and artists. They were used as representations of the natural world, and often functioned as muses for the scholar’s own work. This serpentine stone was most likely prized for its deep mottled green color and ‘waxiness’. The stone sits within a lipped wooden stand, with molded edges and a shoe sole base.
