Collection of Early Spanish and Roman Coins

Item Details

A lot of twenty-two whole or mostly whole coins plus some fragments. Most are Spanish, from a variety of dates, with the earliest bearing the castle and lion insignia of the Crown of Castile (1230-1516), one from the reign of Phillip III (r. 1598-1621), and two dating from the early 19th century, plus others which could not be dated. The lot also includes at least one late Imperial Roman coin (nummus) dating from the reign of Constantius II (r. 317-361 AD), bearing his portrait on the obverse and a soldier stabbing a fallen enemy on the reverse with the partially legible motto ‘FEL TEMP REPARATIO’, ‘the return of happy times’. At least one other coin appears to be Roman based on the style of portraiture, but this could not be confirmed by EBTH at the time of cataloging.
