Antique British Edition of "Ben-Hur" by Lew Wallace
Item Details
An antique British edition of Ben-Hur by Lew Wallace. The book does not have a copyright on the inside but it is inscribed 1911. Ben-Hur, subtitled ‘A Tale of the Christ,’ was first published 1880. This edition has a navy blue cover with gold-toned lettering and spine. Wallace’s novel is a historical fiction epic of a Jewish noble, Judah Ben-Hur, falsely accused of a crime and enslaved by the Romans, whose life intersects with that of Jesus, and who is ultimately inspired to give up his quest for revenge and become a Christian. It became the best-selling American novel of its time, overtaking the previous top selling novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852), and was not overtaken itself until the release of Gone with the Wind (1936).
