Chinese Four-Panel Folding Screen with the Eight Immortals

Item Details

A Chinese four-panel folding screen with the Eight Immortals. The screen has a black lacquer background with an inlaid mother of pearl and stone design of the Daoist Eight Immortals and their emblematic attributes. On the far left panel, Zhongli Quan (钟离权) is depicted with his bare chest and large belly leaning against a tree. Standing behind him is Lan Caihe (藍采和) carrying a basket of flowers. In the next panel, Lü Dongbin (呂洞賓), dressed as a scholar, stands next to He Xiangu (何仙姑) who holds her large lotus flower reputed to improve one’s mental and physical well-being. In the next panel, Zhang Guolao (张果老) stands in the foreground with his back to the viewer. He holds a ‘fish drum’ (鱼鼓 yugu), a tube-shaped bamboo drum with iron mallets. Behind him Cao Guojiu (曹国舅) looks to his right and holds a pair of castanets. In the final panel, Li Tieguai (李铁拐) stands supported by his emblematic iron crutch and with his double-gourd strapped to his back. The last immortal, playing the flute, is Han Xiangzi (韩湘子), depicted in an usually feminine portrayal.
