Original H.H. Wessel Etching

Item Details

A rare and vivid original drypoint etching by listed artist Herman Henry Wessel (Ohio, 1878 – 1969), title, written in the margin to the lower left, ‘Cincinnati from the Covington 12th Street Bridge,’ signed in the lower right in pencil, and signed in the plate in the lower right; full margins, clean, year unknown, edition unknown, plate size is 6.25 × 10.′

A superb dry point etching, wherein the artist has depicted a wonderfully quiet view of the Queen City with the Licking river in the foreground, a small river boat docking at the river’s edge. The line work is dark and sumptuous, exemplary of the burred dry point line. This print is presented in the original wooden frame with black paint and gold border, with a single white mat to edge. Archival materials used, hinged to the backing. Wessel was a student of Frank Duveneck, and his works are featured in the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Cincinnati Wing, as well as in the Smithsonian.
