Signed Carved Ainu Wood Bear Figure

Item Details

A signed, hand-carved Ainu wooden bear figurine. This detailed carving depicts a bear with a salmon in its mouth, with etched notches all around the bottom of the figure representing a long furry coat. This figurine is marked on the underside of one paw with what could be the artist’s signature. The signature appears to read ‘忠’. Ainu bear figurines originally appeared out of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido around the 1920s.
