Original Nellie Jacobs Oil on Canvas Painting

Item Details

An original oil on canvas painting by listed artist Nellie Jacobs, who’s primarily known as Helen Sheldon Smillie (1854 – 1926). Signed to the bottom left hand corner. ‘Active in New York for her entire career, Nellie Jacobs Smillie studied at the National Academy of Design and the Cooper Union, and privately with J.O. Eaton and James D. Smillie. In 1881, she married the painter George Henry Smillie, younger brother of James (via ask art).’ It would appear that this is one of the artist’s earlier paintings seeing as it has been signed with her maiden name. The artist has rendered an iconoclastic image most widely known as ‘The Peaceable Kingdom.’ The image has been reinterpreted many times since it was first painted by Society of Friends minister Edward Hicks (April 4, 1780 – August 23, 1849). It generally consists of a child, or children, surrounded by magnificent animals. This image consists of a wonderfully exuberant child in a white gown, surrounded mainly by barnyard animals, also a statement of the age of industry, with a factory in the background billowing smoke, against which the scene in the foreground fights. A very large painting, with a somewhat naive style of rendering. This majestic work of art is presented in an ample wooden frame with beautifully luminescent gilt.
