Large Fishscale Basket
Item Details
A large fish scale basket. This basket was made by thePassamaquoddy Tribe in Pleasant Point Maine, and sold to the sardine industry which was a huge source of income for the upper Maine coast for many years. Sardines were brought to the dock, poured through a scaling machine. The scales went into these baskets, the sardines onto a conveyor to be packed and cooked. Water drained from the baskets and the scales were sold to pearlescent plants which processed them for use in various pearlescent beauty products: lipstick, nail polish, blush, and some industrial use. The basket is woven from white birch.
