Large Hand-Knotted Sarouk Area Rug

Item Details

A hand-knotted Sarouk area rug, circa mid-twentieth century. This large room-sized rug features a fuchsia field populated with oversized and ornately decorated vase forms and cartouches, from which emanate large sprays of a variety of open, stemmed flower blossoms and large palmettes, in a wide palette of saffron, garnet, ruby, bright blue and shades of paler and turquoise blues, mocha, salmon, chartreuse, and indigo. A central feature of the rug is a large, delicate ewer form, while the interstitial space is densely filled with twining foliate and vine patterns, with great detail in the patterning overall. The deep compound border is complex, highlighted with a pair of saffron guard borders having a carnation and lotus pattern in harmonious colors. The principal border has an indigo field with very large Shah Abbasi palmettes and open lotus flowers in alternating saffron, salmon, bright blue and vivid pink colors and separated by elongated serrated leaves. The selvedge edges are bound in indigo, with a natural cotton warp fringe to either end. Unmarked.
