Herbert Barbee 19th Century Bust of a Woman

A late 19th century neoclassical sculpture depicting a draped female bust by renowned sculptor Herbert Barbee (1848 – 1936). The piece is composed of terracotta toned ceramic, that is hollow on the inside. The artist has incised his signature to the verso.

Barbee was born in Page County. Like his father, William Randolph Barbee, he studied art in Italy, producing various bas-reliefs, statues, and busts. After his return to America he had studios in New York, Baltimore, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Washington City, and Luray. Please see the link provided for more information on the artist.

-Minor cracks, and other wear very minimal types of wear may be present and consistent with age and normal display.
