A woodblock print titled Cat Calling Kittens by Tomoo Inagaki (Japanese, 1902-1980). The cat print illustrating a mother cat with four little kitten faces stacked at the left, the artist’s signature subject with the cats being reduced to their simplest geometric form in a palette of brown, black , gray and white. The woodblock print is numbered in the lower margin 26/50 with the title and the artist’s signature lower right. Presented under glass in presumably the original thin wood frame.

Tomoo Inagaki was born in Tokyo and attended the Okura Commercial High School, he then studied further with print-makers Onchi and Hiratsuka but considered himself mostly self-taught. After WWII, Tomoo established a niche for himself selling his stylized cat prints to avid collectors, his art is appreciated by cat lovers and mid-century art aficionados as well.
