Chinese Gilt Etched Mirrors Featuring Scenes of the Summer Palace
Item Details
A pair of Chinese gilt etched mirrors featuring scenic views from the imperial Summer Palace in Beijing. One mirror depicts the Jade Belt Bridge (玉帶橋 Yu Dai Qiao), an 18th century marble moon bridge built during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736–1795). The second mirror depicts the Marble Boat (石舫 Shi Fang), also known as the Boat of Purity and Ease, a lakeside pavilion on the grounds of the Summer Palace. It was first erected in 1755, also during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, and was later restored in 1893 on the orders of Empress Dowager Cixi. The etched disks sit in the center of a black and gold framed mirror.
